background: ILKAP belongs to the PP2C family and contains one PP2C-like domain. ILKAP has been suggested to inhibit oncogenic transformation and the ILK-GSK3beta signaling axis, and can bind two magnesium or manganese ions per subunit as cofactors. The gene encoding ILKAP maps to human chromosome 2, which consists of 237 million bases encoding over 1,400 genes and making up approximately 8% of the human genome. Function: Protein phosphatase that may play a role in regulation of cell cycle progression via dephosphorylation of its substrates whose appropriate phosphorylation states might be crucial for cell proliferation. Selectively associates with integrin linked kinase (ILK), to modulate cell adhesion and growth factor signaling. Inhibits the ILK-GSK3B signaling axis and may play an important role in inhibiting oncogenic transformation. Subcellular Location: Cytoplasm. Tissue Specificity: Widely expressed. Highest levels expressed in striated muscle. Much lower levels evident in various smooth muscle tissues. Similarity: Belongs to the PP2C family. Contains 1 PP2C-like domain.
